McKevitt welcomes Environment Minister’s decision on National Parks
SDLP Spokesperson for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Karen McKevitt, has welcomed the Environment Minister’s commitment to taking what she described as ‘a considered approach to the development of our natural and built heritage’.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “I welcome the Environment Minister’s decision to hold off on plans for the development of National Parks.
“He has been clear that he will not impose the policy because the argument in favour has not yet been won with those living nearby. Mark H Durkan has demonstrated that he is a Minister who will listen to the concerns of those affected by his decisions and take action accordingly.
“The Minister has now indicated that he intends to explore other ways of maximising the tourism potential for our stunning natural landscapes and historic architecture. As one of the key drivers of the local economy we must strive to protect our natural and built heritage.
The SDLP MLA added, “I have no doubt the Minister’s commitment to meaningful consultation will continue to underpin his efforts in seeking creative new ways to showcase our most precious assets.”
