The Alzheimerâs Society is called on MLAâs to pledge their commitment at the launch of its Dementia-Friendly Communities programme in Northern Ireland. A dementia-friendly community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected, supported, and feel confident they can contribute to community life. The Alzheimerâs Society was holding an information session for MLAs at Parliament Buildings in Stormont to showcase the importance of creating these communities, which support people to live well with dementia and to maintain their independence for as long as possible. MLAs who could not attend the information session were invited to pledge their support for the Dementia Friendly Communities programme and be photographed putting their name on our constituency map with you. The event was sponsored by Michelle McIlveen MLA & Oliver McMullan MLA. The event for MLAs was arranged to raise awareness of dementia and how it can affect a person, to break down barriers to communication so we can all relate better to people with dementia. We wanted to change attitudes and behaviour so that our towns, villages and cities are more inclusive places for people with dementia to live in. Alzheimerâs Society also wants to build strategic relationships and to influence elected representatives, policy makers and legislators.
