This means the typical customer will see their bill rise by around £62 per year.

Budget Energy customers will also face a further increase of around £208 per year as the electricity supplier has also announced an increase of 29% from Friday 26 November 2021.

This is the supplier’s fourth increase this year.

Peter McClenaghan, Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability at The Consumer Council, says, “This news will adversely impact SSE Airtricity and Budget Energy customers.

“Many will already be feeling pressure on their household budgets, especially considering both suppliers have already increased prices in recent months.”

This announcement follows the news from the Utility Regulator last week that electricity bills may continue to increase until summer 2022 due to increases in wholesale costs for energy globally.

Peter continues, “We urge anyone who is struggling with their energy bills to contact their supplier directly for help and information.

“We will continue to work with our energy companies and the Utility Regulator on the development of initiatives to help consumers experiencing payment difficulties and to stress the importance of consumer protection and support during times of such price increases,” he adds.

The Consumer Council’s website has a number of free resources including Switch On: A Guide for Home Energy Users to help consumers be more energy efficient at home, get the best from their electricity or gas supply and save money.

Consumers can also get in touch with the Consumer Council for free independent advice by calling Freephone 0800 121 6022 or by emailing contact@consumercouncil.org.uk.
