Coronavirus Northern Ireland: Newry MP comments on local unemployment figures

Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has emphasised the need for a ‘just and regionally balanced economic recovery’ from COVID-19.

Speaking to Newry Times, the Newry and Armagh MP said, “It was announced that Newry, Mourne and Down has recorded the highest increase in the number of benefit claimants in the North over the last month.

 

 

“COVID-19 has had a detrimental impact on the local economy.

“Many jobs have been lost and families are feeling this increased financial strain.

 

 

“As we move into the economic recovery from this pandemic, it is absolutely vital that we build a new economy that is resilient and just.

“This economy must prioritise the interest of workers and families.

 

 

“Sinn Féin will continue to work proactively over the coming months to protect workers, families and businesses at this time of great hardship.,” he added.
