Coronavirus Northern Ireland: UK Government ‘to pay wages’

The UK Government has said it will pay 80% of wages for employees not working, up to a maximum of £2,500 a month.

Speaking just moments ago at a live Press Conference, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the government was taking the ‘unprecedented’ steps to safeguard people from job losses.

Chancellor Sunak said that self-assessment income payments would also be deferred, while business interruption loads would be interest free for one year, an increase in the six months previously announced by the UK Government.

“In the face of a generation-defining moment, we want to remember that we stood together,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that cafes, bars and restaurants are to close tonight.

He said this was part of strengthening measures that he had announced earlier in the week.

“We are telling cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close tonight as soon as they reasonably can and not reopen tomorrow.”

Gyms, cinemas and nightclubs will also close.

“Do not go out tonight,” he stated,  “We want you to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives. We will get through this – we will get through it together and beat this virus”.
