‘Parents facing fines for putting up live-saving signs is unacceptable’ – Sinn Fein MP

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has said it beggars belief that parents and road safety campaigners could face fines for putting up signs designed to save children’s lives.

The South Down MP said, “It’s bizarre that the Department for Infrastructure is threatening to fine parents and community groups for putting up signs such as ‘Children at play’ designed to reduce speeding and, ultimately, save lives.

“It is unacceptable that parents, community groups and road safety campaigners could be facing fines for putting up signs that could help save the lives of children.

“Often these signs are put up by parents and others as a last resort after calling on the Department to put up official signs.

“The fact that parents could be penalised in this way while others are apparently allowed to erect signs, paramilitary flags and banners – designed to cause hurt and offence to the families whose loved ones were killed by the British army on Bloody Sunday  – with impunity across the north.

“I will be requesting a meeting with the Department for Infrastructure to discuss these threats to punish parents for working to improve road safety while others can flout the rules at will,” he added.
