With one in five Northern Ireland consumers having experienced additional online delivery costs to Northern Ireland, The Consumer Council is calling for retailers to consider fairer delivery charges to Northern Ireland.

Fair Delivery Day, which coincided with one of the busiest online shopping days of the year, aims to raise awareness of delivery issues consumers have when shopping online.

Speaking about the issue, Kellin McCloskey, Head of Postal Services at The Consumer Council said, “Northern Ireland consumers are often hit with additional charges of up to £6.72 extra to deliver to Northern Ireland.

“With a fifth of Northern Ireland consumers doing all their Christmas shopping online last year, it is important that retailers consider fairer delivery charges to Northern Ireland.

“We welcome the announcement from Advertising Standards Authority and Committee for Advertising Practices in taking action against retailers who do not provide upfront information on delivery costs of online orders to Northern Ireland.”

Kellin added, “Earlier this year a new website, www.deliverylaw.uk, was launched to help empower consumers and reduce instance of online delivery surcharging.

“We would encourage shoppers to use this website to find out more about rights, find out how to make a complaint and report any delivery problems with online orders.”

The Consumer Council has a free ‘Guide to Shopping Safely Online’ available to download at www.consumercouncil.org.uk or by contacting 0800 121 6022.
