New consultants for Cardiology Team at Daisy Hill Hospital

Two new Consultant Cardiologists have joined the Southern Trust Cardiology team – providing cardiology care cover at Daisy Hill Hospital.

Both Consultant Cardiologists, Dr Patricia Campbell and Dr Artur Mlodzianowski work across the Southern Trust and between them provide a range of inpatient and outpatient cardiac services at Daisy Hill, five days week.

They are also part of the Trust wide Consultant Cardiologist team offering a 24/7 on call service for the hospital, to cover on evenings and weekends.

Dr Campbell from Newry, graduated from University College Dublin. She trained in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Dublin with residency in the Mayo Clinic, Arizona and completed subspecialty training in Advanced Heart Failure and Echocardiography in Harvard Medical School, Boston.

She has worked as Consultant Cardiologist and Assistant Professor in Dublin and Canada and has international publications on heart failure and imaging in heart failure.

Dr Mlodzianowski undertook his specialised Cardiology training in Poland and has worked in Altnagelvin and the Royal Victoria hospitals.

He has a number of special interests including acute coronary syndromes, interventional cardiology, diagnostic catheterisation and intensive coronary care and spent last year working the ‘Centre of Excellence in Cardiology’ in Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.

Patients are admitted to ‘Coronary Care’ both in the acute phase of illness and for treatments including cardioversion for irregular heart rates. The hospital also offers a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, two days a week, to which GPs can directly refer patients with a history of heart problems.

The dedicated Cardiac Investigation Department provides a range of diagnostic tests including electrocardiograms (ECGS), echocardiograms, remote telemonitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and exercise stress tests.

A Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse provides follow on care by helping patients to recover and rehabilitate following heart attacks when they have been discharged home.

In addition, the hospital’s Heart Failure Nurse works specifically with heart failure patients on the wards, in the out-patient setting and in their own homes to provide close support and regular review.

Welcoming doctors Campbell and Mlodzianowski to the Trust, Head of Service for Cardiology Kay Carroll said, “We are delighted to welcome Patricia and Artur to our cardiology team and particularly to be able to offer their expertise to our patients at Daisy Hill.

“We are very proud of our cardiology service and thanks to recent medical developments and improvements in the way we work together regionally, patients no matter where they live in the Southern Trust or indeed throughout Northern Ireland have much better chance of a full recovery following a heart attack than in the past.

“Both Patricia and Artur will be delivering Consultant-led nurse training to help develop our cardiology nursing expertise and we are also currently recruiting for cardiology nurses to help expand our services at Daisy Hill,” Kay added.
