‘Real living wage is needed urgently’ – Brady

Newry & Armagh MP Mickey Brady has said a real living wage is essential for workers to protect citizens against poverty and deprivation, while ensuring economic growth.

Sinn Féin’s Westminster spokesperson on Welfare Rights and Anti-Poverty measures stated, “For years, workers and families across Ireland have suffered under the economic burden of relentless austerity and chronic low pay.

“Of the OECD countries, only the US and Colombia report higher rates of law pay than the south of Ireland.

“With public services under attack and increasing numbers of families unable to make ends meet we must rethink how we ensure workers are paid fairly for their efforts.

“During Living Wage Week we must discuss progressive measures to lift workers and families from poverty and hardship.

He added, “The time has come to implement a Living Wage.”
