The Southern Trust Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at Craigavon Area Hospital has been ranked as top in Northern Ireland for data quality and the fourth out of the 120 UK centres which undertake coronary stenting.

The national annual assessment was undertaken on behalf of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) and rated Craigavon as “excellent”.

It is recognised that experienced operators undertaking higher volumes of a procedure is associated with better patient outcomes. Craigavon Cardiologists undertake up to three times more stent cases than their counterparts throughout the UK, with patient outcomes reported as very good and complication rates lower than the UK average.

The Southern Trust cardiac team based across Daisy Hill and Craigavon Area hospitals provides a range of acute inpatient and outpatient services.

The Cath Lab opened in 2007, supported by Craigavon Cardiac Care Association. The state of the art facility includes a cath lab theatre and is the only one in Northern Ireland to have a clinical research area adjacent to the lab.

It offers a range of diagnostic and treatment services for patients with heart problems including stent insertion to treat narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and implantation of pacemakers to regulate heart rhythms.

Now ten years old, the cath lab’s high-tech imaging equipment known as a C-Arm is due to be upgraded with a replacement valued at over £800,000. A dedicated modular cath lab on site will ensure that services continue during the refurbishment period which should be complete by November.

Dr Menown, Clinical Lead for the Trust Interventional Cardiology service, commented, “I am delighted to see the excellent findings of this national audit which are tribute to the hard work of our team of clinical physiologists, nursing, radiography and medical staff.

“The team continues to work enthusiastically to maintain these standards as we seek to provide the latest evidence-based practice for our patients. We also hope to expand our volumes even further so that we can offer quicker access to these important procedures.”

Paying tribute to the Team, Esther Gishkori, Director of Acute Services for the Southern Trust said, “We are very proud of our Cardiology service. We have a highly skilled team who are at the forefront of ground breaking innovation in helping to improve patient care.

“Thanks to the expertise and commitment of the cardiology team to get involved in national and international research studies, our patients have access to some of the newest interventions worldwide.

She added, “We are absolutely delighted that our cath lab has been recognised as the best in Northern Ireland. The team are looking forward to their equipment upgrade and staff are doing everything they can to minimise disruption during this period.”
