Newry’s Banjo Bannon supporting Slieve Donard Trek

Terence ‘Banjo’ Bannon who scaled the heights of Mount Everest in 2003 is urging people to support AWARE at their annual Slieve Donard Trek, which is taking place on Saturday 7th October 2017.

AWARE is the national depression charity for Northern Ireland and will hold their annual Slieve Donard Trek event in line with World Mental Health Day.

AWARE is encouraging people to register to show their support for the many people throughout Northern Ireland with a mental illness.

A keen trekker himself, Banjo understands how important exercise and getting outdoors is for your mental health. Banjo is honoured to be supporting AWARE and helping to promote their Slieve Donard Trek coming up in line with World Mental Health Day.

Speaking ahead of the Slieve Donard Trek, Banjo said, “More and more people are being diagnosed with mental illnesses such as depression therefore supporting AWARE is very important to me. I am delighted that AWARE chose to celebrate World Mental Health Day with the Slieve Donard Trek.

“Climbing Mount Everest was and still is one of my greatest achievements. I have personally found out that getting outdoors and trekking mountains has had an amazing impact on how I feel and certainly helps to clear my head.

“In a broader sense, I suppose climbing a mountain does symbolise the personal challenge many of AWARE’s service users have when dealing with depression. By scaling the Mournes peak, you will be helping to stamp out the stigma of depression as well as conquering your own amazing mountain challenge.

“AWARE is in the heart of the community supporting our young people through their Mood Matters Young People programme, but in order to continue these life-saving services, AWARE need the community to raise money and support them.

He added, “Participating in the Slieve Donard Trek is a fantastic way to show your support for AWARE and help raise vital funds to ensure improved education and support services for people with depression across Northern Ireland.”

Lesley Wright is the Fundraising Officer for AWARE and is organising the Slieve Donard Trek event. “The Slieve Donard Trek is a great event to get involved in.  The Slieve Donard Trek is a fantastic team challenge and a great way for groups of friends, family members and colleagues to get together and take on the challenge of Slieve Donard whilst helping to raise money and awareness of AWARE.”

People can sign up for the Slieve Donard Trek on the AWARE website www.aware-ni.org or by calling the AWARE Offices on 028 9035 7820.
