Public urged to back campaign for city park at Albert Basin
Independent Newry City Councillor Kevin McAteer has backed the campaign for a city park at the Albert Basin site and has called on the public to back the Newry 2020 group’s campaign to develop a park on the site.
Speaking to Newry Times, the Independent Councillor stated, “Firstly I want to commend the Newry 2020 group for their campaign to develop a park at the Albert Basin.
“They should be commended for their efforts. Secondly I want to call on the public to back this campaign and also sign the online petition at newry2020.com/petition.
“Newry needs a green public space and the Albert Basin is a prime location. It is ideal and as the Newry 2020 group have stated it would create an iconic waterfront park and greenway in the heart of Newry City.
“I have no doubt that such a park would provide leisure facilities, a heritage centre, woodland area, wildlife sanctuary and various other projects for the people of Newry.

McAteer added, “I fully support this campaign and it is essential that the public back it also and I hope that the council will see sense and ensure that this development takes place. The Albert Basin is the perfect site.”
