W5 join the Council to talk “Ghoul-arbage” this Halloween

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have joined up with W5 to put on a spooktactular recycling show.

w5An exciting event, six shows taking place over three locations, has been organised for frightful young environmentalists aged 7 and over.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Bailie siad, “W5, (who-what-where-when-why) Ireland’s award winning science and discovery centre based at the Odyssey in Belfast, will be visiting our area this Halloween (27-29 October) break.

“The event is free as long as you bring along a disposable battery to be recycled. The Council will also be awarding prizes for the best recycled Halloween costume so a great opportunity to raid the dressing up box and charity shop rather than buying costly new costumes.”

“Our sponsor ERP UK specialise in recycling WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) their aim is to minimise the environmental impact of WEEE, promote recycling and reduce resource consumption.

“A huge amount of electrical items are purchased each year and currently only a small proportion, particularly small items, are collected for recycling. Many of us are not aware that items such as irons, toasters and mobile phones can be recycled.

“These items have a tendency to sit in a cupboard or drawer and gather dust, when in fact they could be put to better use. Electrical items contain many different parts which, once recycled, can be used again in a variety of new applications.”

She added, “So come along, learn more about recycling and enjoy the show. All children have to be accompanied by an adult and as spaces are limited book early to avoid disappointment. The shows are as follows- to book a place please phone your chosen venue.”

• Tuesday 27 October: Newcastle Centre (028 4372 5034), 2.30pm & 4pm
• Wednesday 28 October: The St Patrick Centre Downpatrick (028 4461 2233), 1.30pm & 3.30pm
• Thursday 29 October: Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry (028 3031 3180) 1.30pm and 3.30pm
