Excitement builds for Newry, Mourne and Down Culture Night

Culture Night, the annual celebration of arts and culture is taking place this year on Friday 18th September 2015. culture11This year in Newry, activities will take place at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre and in Newry and Mourne Museum at Bagenal’s Castle. From five o’clock until late, the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre will host performances by Accolade Choir, Newry Community Choir, Sonas Harp Ensemble and Kaleidoscope Imagine Ukulele Orchestra. There will be clay workshops for younger culture vultures and you can enjoy the mixed media exhibition by local artist Fionnuala McKinley. Meanwhile, renowned storyteller Niall de Búrca will be spinning yarns and telling tall tales at Newry and Mourne Museum from 6.30pm. In Downpatrick, events will happen in Down Arts Centre, Down County Museum and St Patrick Square. Down Community Arts will host interactive art workshops, Down Arts Centre will host the launch of ‘A Night at the Pictures’ with Dramability and music by Ossia Music School. Down County Museum will celebrate the opening of the new extension and the unveiling of the High Cross. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Cllr Naomi Bailie said, “I’m looking forward to Culture Night this Friday. The Council’s free programme of events includes workshops and performances for all the family. I’m especially looking forward to ‘A Night at the Pictures’ and Niall de Búrca. “This year’s event is the biggest yet and we look forward to working with community groups, across the district ,such as the Downpatrick Community Collective and Newry Community Choir to support arts and culture in Newry, Mourne and Down.” All events are free.
