The funding came from Newry, Mounre and Down Council’s Voluntary Contributions and the group have pledged to use it to create a flagship Christmas event for the area.

Cllr Mulgrew said the group would work with the entire area to develop something truly special. “This funding has enormous potential and could really help us to fully take advantage of what is a marvellous but underused facility,” she said.

“We’ll be working closely with other interested groups and schools to develop a flagship Christmas event for the area. We want this to be all inclusive and really belong to the whole community so we’ll be holding meetings in the near future to let everyone have their say and bring their ideas forward.

“I just want to congratulate the Friends of Derrymore on securing this funding. They have worked incredibly hard to do so and have big plans for the entire area.

Mulgrew added, “This is good news for the group, good news for the entire community and watch this space because something really exciting is happening here.”
