Excitement builds for 2015 PIPS Newry 10k road race and 5k walk

With last year’s attendance topping more than 500 runners and walkers, organisers are hoping for more of the same for this year’s event.

pips45In an effort to improve the event this year the routes have been organised and changed slightly to accommodate both the runners and the walkers.

This year the runners will return to the finish line via Jerrettspass village and the main Newry road, rather than the return via the Canal Towpath as in previous years.

For both runners and walkers the scenic, flat, traffic-free towpath route is open to all abilities and is an excellent course for people looking to complete an easy flat 5km walk and first half of the 10k run..

These changes allow both runners and walkers an uninterrupted event, while also creating possibly the fastest 10k run event locally.

The event will begin as usual at Sculpt Fitness Studio, Carnbane Industrial Estate Newry at 11am with ample free car parking provided free by MJM Marine.

The event will begin with a memorial balloon launch for all those who have tragically died through suicide and families bereaved are particularly welcome to attend and remember their loved one.

The 10k road race is offering a chip timing and results service so all runners will be able to see their chip time. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female runners and all participants will receive medals and now introducing for the first time a Club Trophy.

pips 10kEvent prize sponsors have provided a new winning cup for the club with the fastest 3 finishers across the male/female categories. This is a great incentive to register your club members online early.

The start and finish area is as always at the Sculpt Fitness Studio, Carnbane Industrial Estate, With scenic views around the towpath and canal area, it is an ideal opportunity to bring your friends and family down to one of the regions most enjoyable and popular running and walking events.

David Garey (Newry City Runners) said, “Last year’s event had an amazing turnout and the family friendly atmosphere was great. It’s so important to show support to this great charity through one of the best 10k runs throughout the year.”
