The SELB Youth Service, in partnership with Translink and supported by the PSNI & the Policing and Community Safety Partnership are commencing the rollout of a 12 week awareness raising stall at Newry Bus Station.

legalhighs1Targeted information about illegal and legal drugs will be disseminated at peak times (3.30pm -5.00pm) every Wednesday starting April 15th to young people and will also incorporate information on mental health, smoking cessation, sexual health and general well-being.

Pauline McQuillan, one of the SELB team who will be delivering the project stated, “Working with young people on a daily basis concerns such as drugs and alcohol misuse, mental health etc. and how to deal with them constantly come up.

“This initiative will begin to promote healthy messages as well as tackling issues around illegal drugs and so called legal highs.”

Sergeant Tom Young, Newry Neighbourhood Police team added, “We welcome and support this initiative from the SELB particularly in relation to the legal highs, there is a lot of misinformation out there, and this initiative will help tackle that.

“It is important that people are made aware that many of these substances may not only be illegal but unsafe; there is a real risk people may be breaking the law and worse that you could take something that is potentially lethal.”
