Carnagat gets YAFTA nod

The Housing Executive is delighted the young people from Carnagat Area Community Association have been shortlisted for a YAFTA.

????????The Youth and Future Talent Awards (YAFTA) from the Newry & Mourne Youth Council puts a spotlight on the positive work young people are involved in across the district council area.

The Housing Executive nominated Carnagat Community Association in the Community Safety Award category for a number projects by the area’s young people.

One key initiative from 2014 was the group’s innovative approach to an issue of stone throwing which was identified last year.

Carnagat’s young people used comic art workshops to create ‘A Stone’s Throw Away…put an end to it now!’ which highlighted the dangers to the community and those travelling through the area if the practice continued. It has seen stone throwing relegated to the past, where it belongs.

Eileen Grant, the Housing Executive’s Community Liaison Officer for Newry was thrilled to learn of Carnagat’s shortlisting and commented, “We’ve witnessed the positive work the group and its young people have carried within the Carnagat area.

“The work they carried out around stone throwing is particularly noteworthy and we were pleased to make the nomination. The Housing Executive team in Newry is delighted for the group’s young people who deserve this recognition.”

Paula McGuigan from Carnagat Community Association echoed Eileen’s sentiments and went on to say, “We were pleased the young people of Carnagat were nominated by the Housing Executive and they are thrilled to be short-listed.

Paula added, “Receiving this recognition has been a great boost to them; the whole committee has everything crossed for the Awards’ night on 26th March.”

The YAFTAs will be presented at a ceremony in the Canal Court Hotel Newry on 26th March 2015.
