Open Mic Night in Newry

Newry Rainbow Community is hosting an Open Mic Nite to “sing out for human rights” as part of the 2014 NI Human Rights Festival.

The event is on Friday 12th December at the NRC Centre, 82a Hill Street, Newry from 8:00pm and all are welcome. Admission is free.

There’s an open invitation to singers and songwriters to come along and perform new or well known songs and anthems that celebrate and address Human Rights issues.

Each year December 10th is celebrated as Human Rights Day across the world. The date marks the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948.

Civil society groups across the World use this date as an opportunity to celebrate and mark the importance of human rights globally.

Every year a diverse range of organisations across Northern Ireland have traditionally held events in the week surrounding this date to mark the occasion and highlight different aspects of human rights as they apply locally and internationally. The NRC is delighted to join them this year.

This years events include stand-up comedy by human rights activists, a Superhero Pub Quiz, discussions around the use of drones and restrictive libel laws.

Other events remind us of discrimination groups in our society still face, whether women, the trans community, children and young people or Travellers, while others look at struggles beyond our shores, for Congolese women, campesinos in Peru, and others whether in Rwanda, Kenya or the Golan.

The festival runs from December 8th – 13th, check their website for the full programme of events here www.humanrightsfestivalni.com
