SDLP Finance spokesperson and MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has said that it is not acceptable that the safety of road surfaces cannot be guaranteed under the current funding regime.

Bradley was commenting after he asked the Regional Development Minister on the floor of the Assembly if he could guarantee that health and safety standards would be maintained. He told Newry Times, “I was taken aback when the Minister told me that his officials are taking legal advice on health and safety issues associated with reduced roads maintenance and street lighting replacement schemes. “The disregard for health and safety on road repair shows clearly the indiscriminate nature of the cuts. “Health and safety on our roads and on our streets is of the utmost importance and budgets should always reflect this fact. “It is imperative that the Finance Minister restores budgets which ensure the highest possible standards of safety on our streets and roads,” Bradley added.
