Homes evacuated as security operation continues in South Armagh

A security operation in South Armagh is continuing into a second day police have said.

A number of homes in the area have been evacuated as part of the security alert.

The Concession Road, Conalig is closed from Cullaville to the border in the direction of Dundalk due to the operation.

It is believed the operation started around noon on Tuesday after police received reports that a device was left in a property in the area.

Slieve Gullion area Sinn Féin Councillor Terry Hearty said that the ongoing security alert has caused serious disruption to the local residents and businessss.

Speaking to Newry Times from the scene the local south Armagh Councillor said, “There has been serious disruption caused to local residents and businesses and it is very obvious that those who created this alert care little about the community.

“The situation has been further compounded by the length of time it is now taking to deal with the alert.”

Newry & Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon, echoing her colleague’s sentiments, stated that those responsible for the security alert have nothing to offer the community.

“This has caused nothing but disruption, distress and frustration for people living in the area. This type of action has nothing to offer the community but hardship,” Fearon stated.
