Sinn Féin MLA Cáitríona Ruane has welcomed news that the Irish Open Golf Tournament is to be held in Royal County Down in 2015. Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “This is an excellent opportunity to promote the entire South Down region when Royal County Down hosts the Irish Open in 2015. “Up to 25,000 spectators are expected to attend the event each day and the local economy could benefit to the tune of several million pounds. County Down contains areas of outstanding beauty such as the Mournes, beautiful beaches and loughs. “It is also steeped in history from the St Patrick trail to the United Irishmen, right up to the present day. So there are many attractions, which can be enjoyed by the visitors. Ruane added, “I intend to meet with the Tourist Board and the minister to ensure that we have the proper funding and infrastructure to maximise the benefit of this opportunity for the entire community of South Down.”
