SDLP European Election Candidate, Alex Attwood MLA, has said that there are industries in South Down that are leading the fight against the economic downturn in Northern Ireland through innovation and collaboration.

Attwood made the comments during a visit to the area where he met with industry leaders, community groups and small businesses.

Speaking to Newry Times, he said, “I have been hugely impressed by the steps taken by businesses and industries in South Down to not only weather the economic storm but diversify their interests and capitalise on new markets.

“Take, for example, the fishermen in Kilkeel using their skills and expertise to help develop off shore wind farms in a way that protects the off shore ecosystem and that sustains the local economy.

“Or consider the strategic partnership between Warrenpoint Harbour Authority and Re-Gen waste to ship valuable recycled material to ports in Scotland, England and across Europe.

“It was great to meet so many people committed to continuing the successes of South Down. From Fishermen in Kilkeel to farmers in Mayobridge, we met with a range of people affected by Europe and European legislation.

Attwood added, “Only the most Pro-European voice can maximise the opportunities and deliver for local citizens & communities.”
