PSNI investigate fuel thefts

Police in Kilkeel are investigating two separate incidents of theft of diesel from a premises in the Head Road area of Annalong.

At approximately 9.30pm on Tuesday 18th February and again at around 12.45 am on Friday 21 February, thieves entered the yard of the property and stole a quantity of diesel from a tank on both occasions.

Police would appeal to anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area on these dates or who is offered fuel at a reduced price or anyone who has any information to contact them on 0845 600 8000. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police would also like to take this opportunity to provide some advice to prevent fuel theft: Make sure the lids of fuel tanks are locked with a suitable padlock, and consider fitting sensor lights to brighten up dark areas around your property, particularly areas around fuel tanks.

Try to limit access to the tank by keeping gates closed and locked making life more difficult for those who engage in this type of crime. To minimise the risk of loss, consider ordering smaller amounts more often and fitting devices that monitor fuel use, and which are designed to alert owners when consumption rises suddenly or when fuel has been stolen.

Anyone seeking further advice on this matter can contact their local Crime Prevention Officer on 0845 600 8000 or find out more on the PSNI website.
