Ireland’s best rowers compete in Newry
Over 130 of the best rowers from across the country competed in the third round of the Rowing Ireland High Performance Trials in Newry from 22-23rd February.
The trials took taking place on the Newry Canal, where the rowers raced in five kilometre time trials on Saturday 22nd February and Sunday 23rd.
This gruelling distance is over twice the standard racing distance of 2 kilometres, and should take the rowers between 18-22 minutes to complete.
70 senior and 58 junior athletes took part, all vying for a place on the Irish team in the 2014 season. They hope to be selected to compete in high-profile events such as the Under 23 World Championships, Junior World Championships and Senior World Championships.
Athletes competing include Sanita Puspure, who competed at the 2012 Olympic Games, and Paul O’Donovan, who won a bronze medal at the 2013 Under 23 World Championships.
The High Performance team will select the top athletes from this trial to progress to the Final Selection Trials, which will take place in five weeks’ time, at the National Rowing Centre in Co. Cork.
Following this trial, the crews will be selected for the international events of the 2014 rowing season, which will start with the World Cup 2 at Aiguebelette in France from 20-22nd June.
