Mayor Ruane condemns ‘horrendous’ armed robbery of elderly couple

Sinn Féin Warrenpoint Councillor and Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council, Mickey Ruane, has described as ‘horrendous’ an armed robbery that took place in the home of an elderly couple on Sunday night.

Ruane said the whole community was in disgust at the incident.

He told Newry Times, “There is a real sense of shock in and around the community today that this incident has taken place and not only that but to such vulnerable members of our society.

“For four masked men to target this couple is both cowardly and disgusting. What is even more concerning is that two of these individuals were armed and I know that the seriousness of that has resonated throughout the community.”

Ruane revealed that the couple were locked in their bathroom during the callous robbery. “To have locked this poor couple in their bathroom is an inexplicable evil act and one can only imagine the trauma that these people have went through.

“I want to convey mine and the wider Warrenpoint communities utter most sympathy to the couple and their family at this difficult time.

Ruane added, “I condemn wholeheartedly what took place on Sunday night, and I would call on anyone in the area who may have seen any suspicious activity or have any information at all to bring it forward to the PSNI so that we can give this family the justice and closure they need.”
