Man, 58, dead after South Armagh collision

A man has died in South Armagh after being hit by a car on Friday evening.

According to media reports, the 58-year-old was hit while walking on the Newtown Road between Newtownhamilton and Belleeks at around 5:30pm today.

Police arrested a 29-year-old woman shortly after the incident on suspicion of a number of road traffic offences and police say she is currently helping them with their enquiries.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information, police have said that the Newtown Road remains closed between the Outlecken Road and Carrickrovaddy Road while investigations are underway.

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh, Dominic Bradley spoke to Newry Times of his sadness at hearing the news. “I am saddened to hear news of a fatal accident on the Belleek to Newtownhamilton Road.

“My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and I express my sincerest sympathy to them. I know that the community will rally around the family and offer every support and comfort to them,” the SDLP MLA added.
