Police investigate ‘bird poisoning incidents’ in Newry and Mourne

Police in Warrenpoint are asking for the assistance of the local community following two incidents where birds were found dead, believed to have been poisoned, in the Hilltown area.

During April 2013, police received a report of a bird found dead on land at Drumdreenagh Road. It is believed this bird was killed through poisoning.

During October, two buzzards were found dead in the Lisnamulligan Road area, suspected to have died after being poisoned.

Buzzards are a bird of prey protected under the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 as amended by the Wildlife and Natural Environment Act (NI) 2011 and it is police responsibility to investigate a breach in the legislation.

Police are investigating the possibility of banned substance Carbofuren being used in the local area.

Police are appealing to anyone with information in relation to these incidents to contact them in Warrenpoint on 0845 600 8000.
