Newry set for £300,000 Watermains Improvement Scheme

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has announced that NI Water will be investing £300,000 in a Watermains Improvement Scheme in the Hill Street area of Newry.

Work is scheduled to start in January and is expected to be completed in around three months.

Speaking to Newry Times, Danny Kennedy said, “This programme of work is particularly welcome news for residents in the Newry area.

“The upgraded watermains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the water supply across Northern Ireland, while also reducing leakage and improving pressure in the area.”

Bill Gowdy, NI Water’s Director of Engineering Procurement added, “The existing infrastructure in the area is in need of repair, and it is essential that NI Water upgrades the necessary watermains in advance of new surfaces being put in place by Newry Council’s “Public Realm” scheme in the town centre.

“Following recent discussions with local elected representatives, DRD Road Service and local trade representatives, this work which was originally planned to begin in October 2013 will now take place in January 2014 to avoid disruption during the busy Christmas period as agreed.

“NI Water and our contractor Lagan Construction will continue to work closely with the council throughout this programme of work, and would like to thank the public and local businesses in advance for their patience and cooperation.”

There are three main areas where the work will take place; Hill Street between the Kildare Street and Margaret Square, Marcus Street between Marcus Square and Lower Water Street, and Hill Street between O’Hagan Street and St Colman’s Park.

As Hill Street is the main arterial route in this area, work will take place at night between Sunday and Thursday from 20.00 to 06.00. Work on Marcus Street will take place during the day as normal.

There will be no road closures in place and vehicular and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. All businesses will be open for business as usual. Work on Marcus Street will commence on Monday 13th January, while work on Hill Street will begin at night time during the week commencing 19th January 2014.

As with all work of this nature, there will be an element of disruption throughout this improvement scheme. However, NI Water and our contractor Lagan Construction will do everything they can to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption.
