Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed the expansion of the Reducing Offending in Partnerships to all areas across the North.

Speaking to Newry Times, Hazzard stated, “A Reducing Offending Partnership was successfully trialled in the Ballymena and Coleraine areas and the intention of the partnership is to address reoffenders and prolific offenders so that they move away from criminal behaviour.

“The partnership that is made up of representatives from the Probation Board, PSNI, Youth Justice Agency, Prison Service and local justice groups. They will work together to construct programmes to tackle high impact crime on communities, such as burglary, car crime and robbery.

“I welcome this approach as it is important that we look at alternative means of justice and encourage people who have participated in criminal behaviour to realise their mistake and desist from further offending.

Hazzard added, “This is a positive step in empowering communities to work with the Justice system in addressing crime in their community and allowing people who were previously involved in crime an alternative way of life.”
