Fearon presses Finance Minister on cross border issues

Newry and Armagh Assembly Member Megan Fearon has impressed upon the newly appointed Finance Minister Simon Hamilton the necessity to meet with the banking sector to discuss difficulties faced by businesses and individuals along the border.

Fearon said, “I am aware of a number of my constituents who are trying to operate businesses along the border.

“They face an inordinate amount of red tape and bureaucracy in almost every area of operation; be it hiring staff, paying duties and taxes and dealing with currency fluctuations.

“Individuals living in the border areas also face the confusion of dealing with two banking systems depending on their situation.

“I am pleased that the Finance Minister has taken my concerns on board and has outlined today that he will meet with all of the banks which operate across the North. Mr Hamilton also outlined his plans to meet with Michael Noonan, his counterpart in the Dail.

Fearon added, “I would like to encourage anyone with specific banking queries to bring them to my attention and I will further their cause with the Finance Minister.”
