McGreevy commends organisers of cricket international
The SDLP leader on Newry and Mourne Council, Councillor Connaire McGreevy has paid tribute to the organizers of the one-day cricket international between Ireland and England.
Describing the event at Malahide in Dublin as “a showcase for all that is good in sport” McGreevy said the sellout crowd underlined that sport in all its forms held the potential to bring all strands of the community together.
“Of course the fact that it was a game against England added an extra degree of competitive spice,” he stated.
“But the fact that on a working day there were people from all parts of Ireland there to support the national team is hugely significant. It also reflects that the type of grassroots development involving a cross community strategy by the Irish Cricket Union is really paying dividends.
McGreevy added, “To be part of a near 11,000 crowd at my first major cricket match was a great experience.”
