Clarke welcomes drop in plastic bag usage

Alliance South Down spokesperson Councillor Patrick Clarke has welcomed the drop in plastic bag usage since a levy was introduced in April.

17.5 million plastic bags were used between April and June, while over 300 million were used in the whole of 2012.

Speaking to Newry Times, Clarke said, “This reduction in plastic bag usage is good news for our environment and will cut the amount of money that Councils will have to spend on removing all the bags that end up as rubbish on our streets.”

“It will also undoubtedly reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfills, which will help us meet our recycling targets.

“I hope the Environment Minister will introduce similar environmental legislation in the coming Assembly term to tackle climate change and make Northern Ireland more sustainable.”
