Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the official opening of Gaelscoil na mBeann, Kilkeel saying it was a great opportunity for children to be educated through the medium of Irish. Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “I was delighted to be invited to the opening of the new Gaelscoil in Kilkeel and I am sure that it will be a great success. “I was at the very first meeting about having a Irish medium school in Kilkeel nearly ten years ago with a small group of very determined parents and language activists. “All are still involved today and it was wonderful to be with them today on such a historic day. More and more parents are opting to educate their children through the medium of Irish and this has to be welcomed. “Not only is learning the Irish language a cultural enrichment but it is also proven that children who are multi lingual find achieve a higher academic excellence. Ruane added, “This school will now provide the residents in the Kilkeel another option in educating their children through the medium of Irish in a first class facility.”
