Sadness at tragic death of cyclist in Newry
South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has described the death of a male cyclist on the outskirts of Newry this morning as a tragedy.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “This is a huge tragedy and my sympathies go to the victim’s family and friends. It is devastating to hear about another death on our roads.
“But this a terrible tragedy and one that highlights the dangers of our roads and the importance of road safety. I hope that there will be a full investigation into the specific circumstances of this accident.
“Irrespective of its outcome, I want to appeal to all roads users, be they on two wheels or four, to be road safe and respect everyone’s journey.
“My words will not make it easier for the parents and family of this young man to come to terms with their grievous loss. But I can assure them that I will continue to fight for improving road safety and better awareness of cyclists, to make sure that no other families have to deal with this sort of tragedy.”
Confirming the death, a spokesman for the PSNI issued a statement to Newry Times. “The Old Warrenpoint Road in Newry remains closed following a fatal road traffic collision.
The spokesman added, “A man, believed to be aged in his 20s, has died following the road traffic collision between a vehicle and a bicycle. Diversions remain in place. There are no further details at present.”
