Woman’s body recovered from Bessbrook Pond

The local community is in a state of shock tonight after it emerged that a woman’s body was found in Bessbrook Pond.

It is believed a group of young people came across the body and contacted the emergency services, who carried out CPR at the scene.

The woman is believed to have been in her 30’s and from the Bessbrook area.

A spokesperson for the PSNI stated, “Police and the NIFRS attended an incident at the pond in the Green Road area of Bessbrook shortly after 6pm this evening.

“A woman who was pulled from the water has since died. There are no further details at this stage.”

Speaking to Newry Times just minutes ago, Newry & Armagh SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said, “I am deeply saddened by the news that a woman has lost her life in The Pond at Bessbrook this evening.

“The community is shocked at this very sad news and my thoughts and the thoughts and prayers of the whole community are with the family at this tragic time,” Bradley added.

Councillor John Feehan added, “The local community is shocked at the news and I have no doubt that they will support the family at this tragic time for them.”

Sinn Fein Newry and Mourne Councillor Pat McGinn, who knows the family, said that the community were ‘shocked and stunned’ at the tragic news, and at the present moment the thoughts and prayers of all were with a grieving family.
