Calling all Santas for Christmas Charity Fun Run

Thursday 22nd November is the date set for Newry’s Annual Santa Charity Fun Run. With a few changes to the usual format of this festive fundraising event, this year’s Santa Fun Run will take place at 6.30pm in conjunction with Newry City’s Christmas Lights Switch on Ceremony in Marcus Square, Hill Street, Newry City Centre.

Already a regular favourite with the local business community, the Santa Fun Run Committee this year want to encourage an all-inclusive family friendly event, with Santas not only from local businesses but also local sports clubs, community organisations, schools and individuals.

It is hoped this year’s Santa Run will raise a minimum of £10,000 for the two nominated charities, PIPS Newry & Mourne and the Newry & Mourne Gateway Club.

Gemma Murphy, Santa Fun Run Committee Chairperson said:

“The Santa Fun Run has become somewhat of a Newry institution now, it’s a firm fixture on our social calendar. We feel that the change in the format of this year’s event will encourage more people to come out, dress up as Santa, have a bit of craic and raise vital funds for the local PIPS charity and Gateway Club.

“Both these charities provide important services in the local community, so we’d like to encourage as many people as possible to register to participate in the Santa Run, in the spirit of community and spirit of giving, so please spread the word and encourage as many family, friends and work colleagues to kick start the Christmas festive fun.”

Please be advised that the Santa Run is only a very short course along Hill Street, lots of fun and is not a race! There will be great prizes on offer for the best dressed Santa and for the person who raises the most sponsorship.

All participating Santas will be provided with delicious refreshments thanks to Graeme at Grounded Espresso Bar, Newry.

So if you are up for the Santa Fun Run challenge, you are asked to raise a minimum of £50 to participate or £100 if you are representing a local business/organisation.

Please contact Emma Donnelly at Parker Green International on 028 3025 4560 or email emma.t@parkergreen.com to register your interest and receive your sponsorship form.

Come along, join in the festive spirit and soak up the Christmas atmosphere, with an extra special evening of sparkling entertainment and family fun to mark the arrival of the festive season.

The Newry Community Band will perform a selection of favourite Christmas tunes, followed by a local artist. There will be a variety of on-street entertainment and all the children will receive a free gift!

The Christmas Lights Switch On will take place at 7pm with Mayor of Council, John McArdle, Santa Claus and a very special guest.

The Christmas Light Switch On and Santa Charity Fun Run is hosted by Newry & Mourne District Council in partnership with Newry City Centre Management and Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade.

PLEASE NOTE: The Santa Fun Run usually takes place on the morning of Newry’s Annual Charity Business Lunch.  This year however the Annual Charity Business Lunch will combine with the Chamber of Commerce & Trade Annual Gala Dinner, into one event.

The Chamber Christmas Gala Dinner which will take place on Thursday 6th December, at 6pm.

The proceeds from the raffle at this gala event will go to The Michaela Harte Foundation. Special guest speakers will include Mickey Harte and John McAreavey.
