SRC tilers clinch places in UK Worldskills Squad

Two young tilers from Southern Regional College have been selected for the UK Skills squad, in the hope of representing the UK team in the WorldSkills 2013 competition in Leipzig, Germany.

John Morgan, from Newry, and Graham Burns, from Laurelvale, who both study Wall and Floor Tiling at SRC’s Greenbank campus with lecturer Paul Doran, have been selected as two out of the three Northern Ireland Tiling representatives that make up the UK Tiling squad.

The students will be beginning an intensive training programme with fellow Squad UK members, all of whom are aged 24 and under. They will be supported by a dedicated Training Manager, who will help them prepare for the selection of the Team that will represent the UK.

They will be competing for one of the coveted places in Team UK at the final selection event which will be held in March 2013. There is then a final period of intensive training following which Team UK will head off to WorldSkills Leipzig, which takes place from 2nd – 7th July 2013.

Both students head to Preston to take part in the SkillbuildUK finals and hope to get in the medals as they compete against the best apprentices in the UK. The two competitors have been preparing for the competition with lecturer Paul Doran in Southern Regional College’s new purpose-built Wall and Floor Tiling Training Facility at the Greenbank campus in Newry.

This new facility caters for all apprentices right through from school leavers through to existing tradesmen requiring qualifications in the ever changing competitive construction sector.
