Tyrone Guthrie Centre Regional Bursary 2012/2013 now open

Newry and Mourne District Council is inviting applications from practitioners in all art forms, born or residing within the Newry and Mourne District Council area, for a bursary which will enable them to spend two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.

The Bursary covers all board and lodging plus the use of a studio if necessary and there is no age limit. Through the Regional Bursary Scheme the Tyrone Guthrie Centre aims to work closely with local authorities and their arts officers to discover emerging and established artists who might benefit from working at Annaghmakerrig.

The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig is set in 450 Acres of forested estate among the drumlins and lakes of County Monaghan. The house was given to the people of Ireland by Sir Tyrone Guthrie who spent most of his working life directing stage productions at the Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells, Covent Garden and the Met. He returned in later years to his childhood home and formed the idea of turning it into a creative centre.

Since its opening in 1981 the peaceful and beautiful environment has provided many artists with the space, time and creative impulse needed to nurture their work. One of the excitements here is to see the burgeoning of new talents. To gain a place artists must have a significant level of achievement and a clear objective in coming to the centre.

There are a variety of work-spaces available, from the quite small for drawing and illustration work to the very large for sculpture and painting. Each visual artist who comes has his or her own studio suited to the work they intend to do.

There is also a photographic darkroom and print workshop. For musicians and composers there is a music room and theatre groups and musical ensembles can enjoy the large rehearsal and performance space.
