On Sunday 26th August Gloria Hunniford and BBC Northern Ireland are coming to Newry to film part of a brand new TV series, The Travelling Picture Show.

Combining rarely seen BBC film archive and wonderful home movies The Travelling Picture Show lifts the lid on some of Newry and Bessbrook’s best loved landmarks, characters, events and celebrations from years gone by.

They’re inviting you to come along to a special screening of some of the gems they’ve uncovered; films that give a tantalising glimpse of your town as it used to be, its history, characters and colour.

Gloria will be in Newry for the event

They’ll be pitching their unique cinema tent in Corry Square, Catherine Street Newry with film showings between 1pm and 4pm, so why not bring your family and friends along to what promises to be a cinematic treat. No ticket is required and you never know who or what you might recognise on the big screen!

And if celebrating and documenting Newry’s local history is your thing, the BBC Bus will also be in town that day. They’ll be open from 12 noon to show you how to digitally preserve your old photographs and memories of Newry and add them to an online archive. So please be sure to bring along snaps that paint a picture of Newry’s rich past.

You can also experience the on-board radio studio where staff can help you record the stories behind your pictures. They will be showcasing the Digital Film archive which has over a hundred years of moving image from Northern Ireland. Find out what’s hiding in the archive from the Newry area and further afield.

If you have old films of your own gathering dust in the attic and you’re not sure what to do with them the team can advise on how to preserve and digitize your old reels.
