Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke has welcomed news that Murlough Beach – located between Dundrum and Newcastle – has received a Green Coast Award, part of the Clean Coast Programme.

Organized by Tidy NI, the award aims to acknowledge beaches which meet guideline water quality standards but which are prized for their natural unspoilt environment.

Speaking to Newry Times, Clarke said: “This is excellent news, another great tourism boost for the Newcastle area.

“To achieve this award, Murlough Beach had to prove it had excellent water quality, litter and waste was under control, it was safe and that the beach was managed effectively. I want to warmly praise all those involved in the upkeep of this beach. This award is a just reward for all their efforts.”

He added, “Our beaches are constantly at risk from pollution and we all need to ensure we do our bit as guardians to keep all our local beaches clean.”
