SDLP Mournes Councillor Brian Quinn has condemned those responsible for cutting down goalposts at Ballymartin GAC on Thursday night.

Speaking to Newry Times, Quinn said: “This can be described as nothing other than sectarian vandalism and has really sickened people living in this area.

“This is the third time that this has happened in just a few weeks which is extremely frustrating for those who have worked to secure the goalposts and those who are working tirelessly to improve community relations in our area. This pitch is used by local children to play football and is a particularly useful facility now that schools are off for summer holidays.”

“Repairing the damage caused by this incident will be another expense on the ratepayers of Newry and Mourne at a time when council resources are scarce.”

He a added, “I strongly appeal to anyone with information on this incident to pass it onto the police immediately.”
