Newry City Ladies, Meet the Players: Fiona Martin
Recently Newry Times caught up with Newry City Ladies Defender and this weeks Player of the Match v Killyleagh YC Ladies, Fiona Martin to find out a little more about her:
Name: Fiona Martin.
Age: 30.
Position: Left back / Centre back.
Previous clubs: Dungannon Swifts, Armagh, Dromore and Loughgall Lakers.
Greatest achievement so far in your career? Playing in the Premier Women’s League.
Best player you have ever played against? Lynsey Patterson (That girl is quick!).
Best ground you played in? Newry showgrounds of course.
Who is your sporting hero? Would have to say Peter Schmeichel.
If you were to throw a party, which celebrities or sports heroes would you ask around? Wentworth Miller, Messi and Fabregas.
What club would you like to play for in the future? Newry Ladies is the only team for me.
What is the one thing you enjoy while playing football? The team spirit that we play with, we play for each other no matter what.
What inspires you to play football? The freedom, it allows me to be myself.
What is your least favourite training drill? Have to say suicides, hate them!
Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far? My dad and my big brother.
What brought you to play for Newry? As I’m from Bessbrook it would technically be my home town and I’d love to finish my career here. Plus Jamesy (James Feehan-manager) tortured me to sign for a while haha!
Who is the biggest joker in the team? I don’t really know, everyone is up for a laugh and a joke. But Aoife Lennon and Julie Henderson tend to tell the silliest jokes!
Which team mate has the biggest bag of toiletries? Probably Aoife Lennon!
Who is the best trainer at the club? I’d have to same Aimee Mackin, she just never stops going. I reckon she runs on Duracell!
Who is the best/worst dresser at the club? We all wear the same kit, so I’d say we are all fab dressers!
Who has the worst taste in music? We all say Connie Burns, but we all love a bit of cheesy 90’s music.
And finally…whats your favourite thing about playing for Newry? The fact that we are one big happy family and we all have each others back.
