The local community is in shock today after police revealed a man, believed to be in his 20’s, has died following an incident on Newry’s Camlough Road.

The incident happened at around 7.50am this morning when a lorry struck a pedestrian close to the Egyptian Arch. Parts of the Camlough Road and the round-about were closed most of the morning as police investigated the accident.

A spokesman for the PSNI in Newry said, “One man, believed to be in his 20’s has died as a result of a one vehicle road traffic incident at the Camlough Road area this morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Newry on 0845 600 8000.

Newry Sinn Fein MLA Mickey Brady spoke to Newry Times and said his thoughts are with the family of the deceased person. “This is a terrible incident and my thoughts are with the family of the person who has lost his life this morning. I am also thinking of the lorry driver who is involved in this most upsetting incident.”

The victim has not been named yet.

More to follow.
