Delivered by the SEED Consortium of Councils (Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon and Newry and Mourne) the SEED 2012 Business Awards was set up to help reward and recognise the most innovative and successful businesses across the four Council areas.

The conference speaking panel included an opening welcome by Mayor John McArdle of Newry and Mourne District Council and presentations from Carole Donaghy, former Director of Virgin Money and leading business and marketing professional, Gerry Faloona, motivational speaker, networking guru and serial entrepreneur, and Adrian Toner, Chief Operating Officer of First Derivatives.

Newry Times scooped the SEED Regional Young Entrepreneur of 2012, an award which recognises young entrepreneurs who have achieved success and have shown great potential for continued success.

Speaking about why Newry Times was chosen for the award, a spokesman for the judges said, “The judging panel were looking for individuals that showed an entrepreneurial spirit in difficult economic times and had been instrumental in the success of the business. The calibre of applicants in this category was particularly high. Newry Times is a business that was set up in 2011 by three young graduates who have used their complimentary skills to launch Newry’s first ever e-newspaper which is free to the public and is updated on a daily basis.”

The spokesman added, “The graduates have embraced technology through the development of their website and mobile phone app and have succeeded in building up a strong following through their use of social media. The entrepreneurs also indicated their plans for future growth and expansion.”

New Lord Mayor for Newry, Councillor John McArdle was also full of praise for the Newry Times team. He stated, “I wish to congratulate Newry Times on your recent award for showing the entrepreneurial spirit which is in such short supply in this era of recession. You and your colleagues are most deserving of each and every award that you receive. In a short space of time you all have created a business which I wish you continued success with.”

The Mayor added, “The Newry Times is a very impressive, informative and professional online publication which will remain a great resource for the community in the Newry and Mourne area as well as those citizens that have been forced to go abroad to seek employment. Your publication will help to maintain those vital avenues of communication that are often lost when departing this jurisdiction. I will be delighted to contribute to your publication in the future if requested.”
