‘Ulster Bank system failure has caused major disruption for businesses’ – Clarke
Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke has stated that the major system failure in the Ulster Bank, which has prevented some of their banking services from operating, has caused major disruption for over 100,000 Ulster Bank account holders.
He was reacting after Ulster Bank admitted that customers have been affected by ongoing delays in processing payments, a delay the bank says could last until Friday.
Speaking to Newry Times, Clarke stated, “This fault has created major disruption for our businesses and personal account holders. Some of our small and medium businesses rely on getting money transfers through on time, so this system crash is not what they need, as well as people waiting on social welfare benefit transfers.”
“If people are looking to invest in Northern Ireland today they will read the headlines of this story and they may think twice about doing so if one of our main banks cannot even do simple money transfers. There are questions that Ulster Bank must answer as to what caused this problem and why there was no sufficient back-up system in place to prevent the issues that their customers have faced today.”
He added, “The Consumer Council has said it has sought reassurance that Ulster Bank customers will not incur any additional charges as a result of the bank’s technical issues.”
A spokeswoman for Ulster Bank said they were working hard to minimize the impact and will ensure that those who are affected do not suffer any financial loss. “Ulster Bank customers can access their money as normal through our branch network. ATM and Anytime services are also fully operational but are reflecting the one-day delay. We appreciate that this is having significant impact on many of our customers and customers of other banks and we apologise unreservedly for this.”
