CARRICKCRUPPEN 3-7 SARSFIELDS 2-7

Sarsfields made the long journey up to Lowes Lane on a wet and windy Friday night. Weather conditions had been far from perfect for a game of football with gale force winds blowing down the field along with driving rain. ‘Cruppen had been forced into a few personnel changes due to injuries from the previous game against Whitecross and welcomed back Stephen Havern who came out of retirement to deputize in goals.

‘Cruppen won the toss and decided to play with the wind in the first half. They soon took control of proceedings and limited the visitors to scraps of possession. Scores from Paul Keenan (0-3), James Loughran (1-0), Declan Carville (1-1) and a point from Declan Monaghan on his return having replaced the injured James Hughes had ‘Cruppen lead by 9 at half time on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-2.

It wasn’t the first time this year that Carrickcruppen had a 9 point lead at half-time and those in attendance had been hoping of a different outcome when surrendering a similar lead against Culloville earlier in the season. Sarsfields took full advantage of the wind and ‘Cruppen were soon under pressure which resulted in having to work in numbers to try and nullify the threat of the visitors. Sarsfields began clawing into the ‘Cruppen lead and were back on level terms towards the end of the game til up stepped the reliable Declan Monaghan who expertly found the back of the net giving the Sarsfields ‘keeper no chance of saving.

The final whistle went much to the relief of every Carrickcruppen person there and in doing so giving another two points on the league table. A game that was never going to be pretty to watch given the weather conditions, however, we can be happy with the workmanlike performance from everyone in the second half! A hard earned two points was achieved. Well done lads.

CARRICKCRUPPEN RESERVES 3-12 GRANEMORE 0-9

The reserve team continued their winning run when they travelled to Granemore on Wednesday night and came away with a well deserved victory on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-9. Highlight of the game was the performance of Declan Monaghan who posted a remarkable 3-2 on his return to competitive football. The pairing of Monaghan and Peter Loughran up front was unstoppable, with the home defence unable to curtail their combined play.

Stephen Havern made a welcome return to club colours, bringing off a number of crucial saves. Darren O Grady was his usual unflappable self at the back, while Noel Finnegan mopped up everything that came down the middle. By halftime the game was still in the balance, ‘Cruppen going in with a 2-4 to 0-4 lead.

But a third Monaghan goal shortly after the break put daylight between the sides and ‘Cruppen ran out comfortable winners in the end. Next up is Silverbridge on Wednesday night-all players to be at the clubhouse at 6.15pm. The semi-final of the reserve championship game against Clan na Gael has been postponed, we await confirmation from the County Board as to time and venue.

U1Os GO TO CARRYDUFF TOURNAMENT

The Carrickcruppen U10s travelled to Carryduff for their Peter Cassidy memorial U10s tournament on Saturday. The group was split into two teams. Our junior team played exceptionally well but was unable to qualify for the final stages. Our senior U10s team were sensational finishing their semi final game with Clann Eireann no score to both teams, the game was decided on extra time with first team to score won the semi final. We were very unlucky when a free kick was given to Clann Eireann which they scored, the outcome of the semi final was no reflection on how well our U10s played today, the coaches and parents were very happy with the football played by both teams, well done to all of them.
