Newry City Ladies, Meet the Players: Nicola Clements

Recently Newry Times caught up with Newry City Ladies Defender, Nicola Clements to find out a little more about her:

Name: Nicola Clements.

Age: 25.

Position: Centre back.

Previous clubs: Armagh City Ladies, Dromore Ladies.

Greatest achievement so far in your career? Winning the Rebok 5 a-side competition at under 16 level over in Bolton.

Best player you have played against? Every week in training I have to play against some of the best lady footballers in this country: Aoife Lennon and Alex Hurst. I hate trying to tackle Moya Feehan and Aimee Mackin in training.

Best ground you have played in? Rebok stadium in Bolton, and then off course Newry Showgrounds.

Who is your sporting hero? Paul Scholes.

If you were to throw a party which celebrities or sports people would you ask around? Alex Ferguson, Messi and Rooney.

What club would you like to play for in the future? Newry City until I retire!

What is one thing that you enjoy while playing football? I love playing for Newry because we are a team that plays football. We don’t just hoof the ball as a lot of ladies teams do. I enjoy being part of that.

What inspires you to play football? I’ve played football since I could walk and just love it. I can’t imagine my life without it.

What is your least favourite training drill? Fitness!! Because I am not fit!!

Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far? My dad.

What brought you to play for Newry? Ryan McConville asked me to come down, I seen how talented the young girls were and I knew this team was going places, plus it’s my hometown – I live two minutes from the ground.

Who is the biggest joker in the team? Probably Aoife Lennon but we all love a joke, it is great craic in the changing rooms and on the pitch. Great atmosphere!

Which team mate has the biggest bag of toiletries? Aofie Lennon carries everything but the kitchen sink to football…

Who is the best trainer at the club? Aimee Mackin always puts in 100% effort every training session and match with a smile on her face.

Who is the best/worst dresser in the team? Best dresser is me of course, worst would probably be Ryan with his tights!! Haha!

Who has the worst taste in music in the team? Connie Burns, Vengaboys on repeat!!

And finally…What’s your favourite thing about playing for Newry? The craic!! No matter what we are doing; training, playing matches, fundraising we are always having a laugh. Great bunch of girls.
