Visual Disability Information Days

The RNIB Sensory Engagement Programme, supported by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, is hosting two information days for visually impaired people.

Banbridge Library is the venue for the information day on Tuesday 8th May from 10.30am-1pm, while Cathedral Road Community Centre in Armagh will host the event on 10th May from 10.30am-1pm.

Social Worker James Todd of the Southern Trust’s Sensory Impairment Team explained to Newry Times, “The information days are aimed at people who are struggling with sight loss or people who know someone who is struggling with a visual impairment. There will be information stands including RNIB benefits service, free confidence building courses, Northern Ireland Library Service, local colleges, Fit4U programme and community safety. There will be information on where to get help and support with services, benefits and social activities across the Southern Trust area.”

Danny McSherry, RNIB Northern Ireland Project Coordinator, added, “The Sensory Engagement Project aims to improve engagement levels and confidence of people with sensory disabilities. We hope that the lives of around 300 people with hearing and sight difficulties will be improved as a result of the exchange of expertise, information and best practice, and the training of sensory impairment staff. There will be examples of taster sessions at local sports and recreation centres, hobbies and pastimes and ways to keep safe and healthy at home.”
