The police have tonight confirmed that a white van at the centre of a major security operation contained a bomb.

The van, which was parked on the Drumalane Road/Fathom Line beside Newry Canal, has caused widespread disruption throughout Newry over this past two days as Police and Army Technical Officers sealed off the area to investigate the van. The security alert started after a member of the public contacted police about the suspicious vehicle parked at the side of the road.

Speaking just minutes ago, the PSNI said that a ‘viable explosive device’ was found inside the van. The road is now reopened to traffic after the device on board was made safe.

More to follow.
